The election of Hamas by Palestinians in the powder keg of the Middle East has shocked the world. It is the militant organization sworn to Israel’s destruction and has carried out about 60 suicide attacks against Israelis in the past five years, averaging one a month. The same aspirations have been so recently expressed by Iran and no doubt they are not alone in their sentiments.
Our administration has declared that Hamas could not form a legitimate government unless it dropped its demand to destroy Israel and renounced violence. But what are the chances?
In spite of how bleak the world may look, Christians have a bright outlook for the future of the world. It is not based on the uncertain and changing winds of politics; it is based on the promises of God in the Bible.
The prophet Isaiah foretold days of uninterrupted peace in answer to that well-known prayer: “Thy kingdom come.” Anticipating the coming of the Lord, Isaiah tells us that “He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.” Isaiah 2:4.
Unquestionably there are sunny days ahead for a dark world. But we still come back to the one absolutely necessity if we hope to share in those glorious days. The Lord Jesus emphatically stated, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:3.
